Betimes and oft a thought occurs that really makes me laugh
But these times grow less frequent as I tear my mind in half
In trying to determine what is wrong and what is right
What is good and what is evil.  So I ponder through the night.
Am I sad or am I happy and where do I belong?
And is it that important to understand a song
Of protest or of loving?  People singing me advice.
Is the world so very awful?  Surely somewhere it is nice.
Maybe it’s nice in Shangri-La, or Burton upon Trent?
Is there no one left who’s honest?  Is everybody bent?
I’m good at asking questions, it’s a knack that I’ve acquired.
Someday I’ll find the answers or give up because I’m tired.
So till then I’ll take my happiness with all the strings attached
And play the Punchinello till I’m finally despatched
To the place where there’s no questions that awaits us in the sky
Where they answer the really big one which is very simply ‘Why?’
